چکیده

The unidentified X-ray source RX J0720.4-3125 is a candidate isolated neutron star showing evidence for pulsed emission with an 8.39 s period and a spectrum consistent with a blackbody at kT = 80 eV (Haberl et al. 1996, 1997). We show that this source is most likely an old isolated neutron star accreting from surrounding media. We then argue that unless it was born with a long spin period (Pi ∼> 0.5 seconds) and weak field (Bi ∼< 10 G), the magnetic field on this star must have decayed. With Bi ∼ 10 G, we find decay timescales ∼> 10 7 yrs for power law decay or ∼> 10 8 yrs for exponential decay. A measured period derivative Ṗ ∼< 10 −16 s s−1 would be consistent with an old accreting isolated neutron star. Both power law and exponential decay models can give a Ṗ ∼ 10−16 s s−1, though a Ṗ substantially less than this would be indicative of exponential field decay. RX J0720.4−3125 is an unidentified bright soft X-ray source which shows pulsations at a 8.39 s period and has a thermal spectrum. We present deep B and R band images of its X-ray localization. We find one possible counterpart in the X-ray error box, with magnitudes B = 26.6±0.2 and R = 26.9±0.3. The very high X-ray to optical flux ratio confirms that this object is an isolated neutron star. We ...

Radio Observations of Two Isolated Neutron Stars , RX J 0720 . 4 – 3125 and RX J 0806 . 4 – 4132

Radio observations of two isolated neutron stars, RX J0720.4–3125 and RX J0806.4– 4132, have been made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array at a frequency of 1.4 GHz. No continuum emission is detected from either object with a 3-σ upper limit of 0.2 mJy. The data were also folded synchronously with the known rotation periods of 8.4 and 11.4 s respectively. No pulsed emission was detected....

Spectral and Rotational Changes in the Isolated Neutron Star Rx J 0720

RX J0720.4−3125 is an isolated neutron star that, uniquely in its class, has shown changes in its thermal X-ray spectrum. We use new spectra taken with Chandra’s Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer, as well as archival observations, to try to understand the timescale and nature of these changes. We construct lightcurves, which show both small, slow variations on a timescale of years, a...

RX J0720.4-3125 has recently been identified as a pulsating soft X-ray source in the ROSAT all-sky survey with a period of 8.391 s. Its spectrum is well characterized by a black-body with a temperature of 8× 10 K. We propose that the radiation from this object is thermal emission from a cooling neutron star. For this black-body temperature we can obtain a robust estimate of the object’s age of ...

Evidence for precession of the isolated neutron star RX J 0720 . 4 − 3125 ⋆

The XMM-Newton spectra of the isolated neutron star RX J0720.4−3125 obtained over 4.5 years can be described by sinusoidal variations in the inferred blackbody temperature, the size of the emitting area and the depth of the absorption line with a period of 7.1±0.5 years, which we suggest to be the precession period of the neutron star. Precession of a neutron star with two hot spots of differen...
